DAY 116 - TASTE AND SEE

“Taste and see that the Lord is good!” Psalm 34:8

I know someone who knows someone who had COVID. I had heard one of the main symptoms of COVID was a complete loss of taste, so I reached out to this someone who had COVID and asked what it was like to not have the ability to taste the food. They said it was one of the weirdest things they’ve ever experienced. Put an apple in your mouth and then put a sandwich and nothing about them tasted differently. They were the same.

This person said they’d put a lot of effort into making meals only to sit down, not be able to taste what they had made. They found it pointless to continue eating because their food was just so bland. This overcomer of COVID did say they could tell the difference between salty and sweet which is very interesting.

Did you also know that when you lose the ability to taste you also lose the ability to smell? Not only can you not taste your food but you also can’t smell it or anything else for that matter. No aroma or anything. Take away this person’s ability to see and all they would have is the sense of touch and hearing. What would that world be like?

This person said for a few days everything was just sorta… bleh.

I wonder if most of our experiences with God are just sorta… bleh. Like having no taste. We know he’s there, we know with God there is supposed to be a flavor that brings joy, aromas that bring anticipation, and that with God everything should be better and yet most of the time it’s just… bleh. Not terrible. But not good. Tasteless. Kinda meaningless.

How did David know to put those words in Psalm 34?

Maybe because that is most people’s experience with God?

David goes on to describe all the “flavors” God adds to the life of those who seek him, things David himself had experienced.

There is a goodness and a sweetness that God does bring to this life. It doesn’t have to be just… bleh.

Grace and Peace.
