DAY 74 - A LOT OF BREAD

KEATON TUCKER, YA GROUPS TEAM LEAD

“And again he said, ‘to what shall I compare the Kingdom of God? It is like leaven that a woman took and hid in three measures of flour, until it was all leavened.’” Luke 13:20-21

More on the Kingdom of God? Yes! It was the gospel Jesus preached and we should talk about it.

This verse above is a comparison to an event that happened in Genesis 18. This is the story where God visits Abraham as 3 men in the desert. Abraham runs to greet these men (kinda like God does in the prodigal son story), greets them, and offers them food. He then goes to his wife Sarah and tells her to make three measures of fine flour.

How much are 3 measures of fine flour? Enough to make about 70lbs of bread…

Everyone in Israel who heard this parable Jesus just told would have known exactly which story in Genesis he was referencing. They would have known that God just told Abraham to allow foreigners into his own house as one of his own family, that Abraham ran to meet these men (like the Father in the prodigal son story) and that he prepared his best calf for these men (again, like the Father in the prodigal son story).

There is much to be said about all of those points but what about the leaven?

It doesn’t take much leaven to turn dough into a feast. It takes a small amount to completely transform dough into something everyone can enjoy and take part in once it has expanded into all of the dough.

Little things can turn into feasts in the Kingdom of God.

All those little things that feel insignificant are not insignificant. They bring the Kingdom of God to earth and there is plenty for everyone.
