DAY 8 - ASCRIBE TO THE LORD
Milanna Martillaro, Creative & Production Resident
“Ascribe to the LORD the glory due his name; worship the LORD in the splendor of holiness.” Psalm 29:2
The idea of “glory” sometimes is a hard concept to grasp. It's honestly a very abstract word throughout the whole Bible. We know that as Christians, we are supposed to bring God glory, and I think in a time such as this, the concept of God’s glory might seem like a foreign idea. You might be asking, “How can something like what is happening possibly bring God glory?” or maybe you’re thinking, “I am truly suffering in this, how can I even give God glory?”
During this time I have really been diving into the Psalms. And as I was reading the other day, I came across a word that really stuck out to me: the word “ASCRIBE”. This word is found throughout all of Psalm 29 and is even in the title of the chapter. The definition of the word ascribe is “to accredit” or “to think of as belonging”. So what this verse in Psalm 29 is saying is that the glory actually already belongs to the Lord. This one word ended up fueling me with so much encouragement. The fact that all of the glory, and all the honor, and all the power is already sitting with our God on His throne and that there is no amount of trial, tribulation, or suffering that could ever take that glory away from God!
Romans 8:18 tells us that, “the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us.” So this means that while we might be in present suffering, while we might be stuck at home, away from our loved ones, lives turned completely upside down, with little to no certainty of what this looks like, absolutely none of it even comes close to the glory that Jesus Christ holds for us in heaven.
Through everything we are currently experiencing, through every amount of whatever kind of suffering, we can still ascribe all the glory and honor and power to the Lord, because it already belongs to Him and He deserves it all and more. So I encourage you, young adult, during this time to look for ways to give God glory for who He is, what He’s done, and what He is going to do! Read all of Psalm 29 and let this scripture bring you comfort and confidence that Jesus is still on the throne surrounded by all the glory that rightfully belongs to Him!
