DAY 82 - A DOSE OF PERSPECTIVE
CONNOR GRIM, YA ASSOCIATE PASTOR & VOLUNTEER TEAM LEAD
“When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, what is mankind that you are mindful of them, human beings that you care for them? You have made them a little lower than the angels and crowned them with glory and honor.” Psalms 8:3-5 NIV
Every once and a while it's healthy for our souls to get a little dose of perspective. Throughout life, we’ll experience both highs and lows and while there are lessons to be learned in both of them, getting stuck in either of those seasons can cause us to lose sight of what God might have for us in life.
There are times in life when I feel like the world revolves around me. Maybe I’ve just crushed a sermon prep (nerdy I know), or gotten a promotion at work and I just feel on cloud 9. Those moments are great! But if our entire life revolves around chasing the high of self-gratification we can quickly become self-consumed and self-centered. I love in this psalm how David reflects on the smallness and frailty of humanity. In comparison to the vastness of the heavens, the moon and stars he asks God, “What is mankind that you’re mindful of them, human beings that you care for them?”
David is reminding his soul that while we are beautifully and uniquely created, were rather small and here on earth for a quick time. So, maximize the time your given!
On the other side, there are seasons where I really am going through a hard time. Maybe I’ve experienced a loss or I feel like I’ve been devalued by a friend or co-worker. It’s easy to live in a state of sadness and pity and find yourself struggling with your self-esteem. In this very same psalm, David reminds his soul of the significance God has placed on his life. He says, “You have made him (humanity) a little lower than the angels and crowned them with glory and honor.”
Again we find David gaining perspective on the value God has placed on you and I. While the world might not revolve around us (and trust me that’s a good thing) God has made us in His image, crowned us with glory and honor, given us vision and purpose, and salvation that’s found in Jesus.
I don’t know what you’re walking through today but I bet your soul could use a little healthy dose of perspective. Take a moment to read Psalm 8 and allow God to speak to you today!
